MINUTES OF GCMS PTA MTG

NOV. 10, 2011

Mrs. Hatzichristos and Mr. Montasero both spoke of the benefits of “team teaching”, which is the method of instruction used in the GCMS.  Benefits included:  better transitions through the grades, able to address individual student needs easier, facilitates learning, encourages positive behavior, children feel better connected to teachers and to each other, teachers are able to align curriculum and share ideas, resources and strategies to help convey the material.

Teachers also feel they are able to get to know the students faster and better. They can discuss individual students strengths and weaknesses together. This makes for a stronger teacher/student relationship.

By working in a team model, teachers are also able to coordinate assignments and tests so the students have an evenly based workload in regard to tests, projects and homework.

Ass’t Principals Ms. Lee and Mr. Marr both spoke in regard to how the school year has been going thus far.  Again, they reassured parents to feel free to call the school with any concerns at all, stating that the GCMS has an open door policy and parental concerns are always addressed.

Mrs. Weiner, the 7th grade Guidance Counselor, spoke once again regarding the importance of the children joining intramurals or a school club.  Handouts on all the clubs were given out.  The club information can also be found on the Middle School Website.

Mrs. Weiner conveyed the importance of belonging to a group for the social and emotional well being of the children.

Additionally, to be inducted into the National Junior Honor Society you must meet the academic requirements AND be involved in school activities.

She also mentioned that the INN in Hempstead is allowing child volunteers to come and assist on Sunday, Nov. 20th from 12 – 1pm.  For more information contact the Guidance Office.

Dr. Osroff spoke again on all the building improvements that are happening in the Middle School, such as the new gym and the heating system.

Yvonne Varano, 1st VP of Budget for the PTA spoke at length regarding the 2% Budget Cap, the implications and limitations that it presents, and how important it is to be informed.  She urged everyone to go to the School Board Budget meetings so they can have a clear understanding of what is at stake.

Finally, we mentioned that the Garden City Student Achievement Report would be given on Wednesday, Nov. 30th in the High School Library.  Attendance is strongly recommended, as this is quite informative to see how our students performed in comparison to other districts.
