Homestead PTA Meeting Minutes – October 12, 2010

Randi DeCicco, Director called meeting to order at 9:33 am.

Randi welcomed everyone and reviewed what parents can expect at a PTA meeting ie: updates from school administers, school nurse, PTA Director, committee reports.

Welcoming Remarks from Dr. Suzanne Viscovich, Principal

  • Kids are adjusting well  to the new school year
  • Primary School Curriculum guidelines are outlined in a new brochure given to parents at back to school night.
  • A special report card committee worked over a year on revising the primary report cards.  Presentation of New Primary Report Cards will be reviewed at a Joint Primary PTA Meeting on 10/27 @ 6:30 PM at Homestead.  The Primary Principals will explain the process behind the creation of the new report cards and explain how the grade level curriculum guides align with new report cards.

Mrs Gilhooly, School Nurse report:

  • In September one case of mono and 1 strep throat
  • If you are going to be absent or late for any reason please send a note or call
  • Vision and Hearing Screening is starting if child doesn’t do well it could be an off day and the child will be checked a 2nd time. If they don’t pass the 2nd time parents will receive a call and note home.
  • Looking for people to donate snacks like gold fish will be given to kids if they forget snack
  • Physical exams due Oct 2 for Kindergarten not 1st grade. 1st graders will need them entering 2nd grade.
  • Safety Concerns- Keep Silly Bands at home kids do put them in their month and they do break easily plus kids want to trade and play with them which is distracting.  Also nothing should be hanging outside backpack.

Committee Reports:

Box Tops- Collecting box tops to earn cash for the school each worth 10 cents last year we earned $500. 1st Sent home sheet for kids to paste or tape box tops.

Curriculum- Reminder about Joint Primary PTA Meeting on 10/27 @ 6:30 PM at Homestead.  

Health and Safety- Workshops will be available for parents throughout the year. There will be a discussion and presentation on cyber-bullying Ryan’s Story on Nov 17th at 7:30pm at the GC HS auditorium.

Literacy at Lunch- Will begin in January parents, grandparents can come in and play a game with your child and peers.

Membership- still collecting membership please give to Randi or Courtney.

Photography- Day went well only one kid absent. Make up/ Retake day will be Nov. 9.

Plant Sale will be May 6

Reflections- Deadline is Oct. 29 go on the website to follow directions for submissions. Theme: Together we Can. Sample project will be available to show classes.

School Supplies- No updates

Sportswear- Pick up November 20th from 12:30-4:30 at high school

Homecoming will have items for cash and carry

Staff Appreciation- No updates

Beautification-

  • each class will make one scarecrow during recess then displayed in courtyard pictures will be available on web site gardencitypta.org
  • Looking for bulbs or plants to plant in courtyard

Decorations- Need artistic talents or interests will be assigned a page from a storybook to draw or trace contact Eileen Connor or Lisa Malatak

PTA Dinner- Biggest fundraiser of the year on March 24 The Inn at New Hyde Park looking for donations contact Stacy Stankey

PTA Happenings and Updates from Randi DeCicco

  • Help earn money for Homestead while grocery shopping go to Stop and Shop web site -www.stopandshop.com and click on the A+ program choose Homestead. Every year you need to register.

  • Storybook parade Friday Oct. 29 at 10:30 am

  • Next meeting Dec 7th at 9:30 am

  • Question from parent about Will the school have library exchange? Response from Dr. V.  Not at this time currently the library space is being utilized for an art class.
