The Garden City High School PTA hosted a packed house at its January 30th PTA meeting, featuring Jacques Steinberg, writer of the New York Times college admissions blog, “The Choice.” Mr. Steinberg is also the author of The Gatekeepers: Inside the Admissions Process of a Premier College, a book about his year in the admissions office of Wesleyan University.
Also on hand that night was the Garden City High School counseling staff that sat on a panel and answered questions with Mr. Steinberg following his presentation.
Mr. Steinberg discussed the current college admissions climate, and what parents and students need to be aware of while navigating the process. His experiences in the admissions office at Wesleyan as well as his blogging for “The Choice” provide Mr. Steinberg with a wealth of information very useful for parents and students.
The guidance counseling staff at Garden City High School has well over 100 years of combined experience in the college search, application and admissions process. They fielded an array of questions from the parents in the audience, and were available after the presentation to address individual concerns.
An important mission of the Garden City PTA is to provide continuing education for parents on a variety of topics through workshops, speakers and special events. The PTA is able to support these programs through its fundraising efforts as well as Membership dues. Please visit the PTA website at www.gardencitypta.org for more information and to join the PTA.
