Parent University

Five years and still going strong!  This was the fifth year that Parent University has been offering parents in our community the opportunity to sharpen their parenting skills. Not even a polar vortex could stop parents from heading to the High School last Thursday to take advantage of such a wonderful event. This year, parents were able to choose from 10 different workshops - selected by GC’s parents and educators.

One of the most popular workshops was - “Learning to Read is FUN with FUNdations” which was presented by Garden City teachers - S. Bennett, L. Healey, M. Joyce, E. McGoldrick, T. Pignetti, K. Roffman, M. Scheurer, K. Thompson and Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction - Dr. Ted Cannone.  Parents were also excited to learn just how easy it is to introduce STEAM fun-filled activities at home - clearly evident by the many feathers bouncing about the halls. Classrooms were filled with caregivers eager to learn how to more mindfully parent our children, the cause of the missed homework assignment - scatterbrain of their teen,  and what is the vaping epidemic and how to discuss it with their children.

We have already received some positive feedback on this year’s presenters and workshops -

“AMAZED by the presenter’s poignant and thorough approach to this vast topic! Her true passion for empowering parents to help their children is inspiring. Hopefully she can present at future events...!”

“Nice variety of presenters. Nice to see what our kids are doing so we can ‘talk the language’”

“I am so impressed with all of the primary and elementary teachers who presented last night. Their enthusiasm for the FUNdations program is contagious. Our children are in such great hands, across the district.”

If registered for Parent University, please complete the short online survey. We would love to learn what we did right, as well as ways we could improve.

We would like to thank the High School administration and staff for allowing us to use the building. We would like to thank our sponsoring organizations and the Garden City Community. GCPU20 is looking for topics that are of interest to parents.  Please contact us with your suggestions - Until next year!
