OCTOBER NEWSLETTER -HOMESTEAD SCHOOL-

Hello Homestead families,
We are already one month in to the new school year and hopefully everyone is settling in. We had a great turn out at our Back to School Night. It was a terrific opportunity to visit the school and get to know the teachers and school administration. A big thank you to our class parents that helped organize the evening and run all of the class lotteries. If you didn’t get a chance to visit the PTA’s Sportswear table that night, please go to our
GC Sportswear Store  to place your order.

September was a busy and enjoyable month for our children. The children had their Photo Day which was a success. Irvin Simon, our school photographer, will be sending an email shortly including your child’s photo shoot. Thank you to my Photography Board Reps, Michelle Persaud, Alissa Sioukas, Juli Corrigan and Katherine Miller for all their planning. Another thank you to the parents that volunteered their time on Photo Day to ensure everything went smoothly. If you are unhappy with your child’s photos or your child was absent, Photo Retake Day is scheduled for October 24th .

Our first Homestead PTA meeting will be Tuesday, October 3 rd at 9:30am. Please come and hear updates from me, our principal, our school nurse and our Homestead PTA Board Reps.  Also, Homestead’s Ms. Alyson Sandler will be presenting on iPad Usage to Support Classroom Instruction.

Homestead’s Decoration Committee has chosen the works of Dr. Seuss to decorate our hallways and inspire our children this year. They are very excited to get started. Please go go our Sign Up Genius to see what materials are still needed. In addition, if you would like to be a creative part of this committee, please email Janis Scianablo at scianablofamily@verizon.net and Jennifer Davis at jdavis04@optonline.net. More to come on this  committee in November’s newsletter.

The PTA’s National Reflections Contest theme for this year is “Within Reach”. My Reflections Board Reps this year are Deepa Rajpal and Jigisha Motwani. They have already placed an entry box by the main office at Homestead. They will be visiting the classrooms shortly to speak to the children about how they can get started and to show them examples from last year. Homestead had many successful entries last year. At the primary level, we had 9 children that placed in the Literature, Photography and Visual Arts categories as well as 8 honorable mentions. We even had 1 child who proceeded to the Nassau Region level. The deadline is November 6th , so get the children started! For more info click here.

Homestead’s 1st Box Tops Drive is underway. Everyone should have received an email from this year’s coordinator, Laura Bley.  Attached to this email, Laura included a kick off letter as well as a collection sheet to print out.  The sheet has room for 25 Box Tops so let your children go on a scavenger hunt in your pantry. Please click  here for a list of participating products. Our due date is Monday, October 23rd. Even after our Box Top drive is over, please keep collecting / sending the Box Tops in to get ready for our next drive in February. This is a wonderful and simple way to raise money for our school.

Be on the lookout for an email and Sign Up Genius from Carey Savio, Homestead’s Library Board Rep. Homestead librarian, Mrs. Compton, needs our help again this year to re-shelve the books that our children take out each week. We had an increase in enrollment this year so Mrs. Compton needs our help more than ever! Thank you in advance for helping with this task. Even if you sign up only once during the year and come for 30 minutes, it is so helpful to spread the work around.

Garden City School District’s Spirit Week begins on October 10th. Hopefully, everyone received the email to order t-shirts for the pep rally on Friday, October 13th and for the Homecoming parade / game the following day. If you missed the deadline to order the t-shirts, simply try to have your children wear maroon and grey to school that Friday.
Did you know? You can earn money for our school by registering your Stop and Shop Rewards card! Go to www.stopandshop.com to sign up. Our school id is 06137. Homestead will receive money that can be used towards wonderful programs at our school!
