Monthly eNewsletter School Report

Well Spring is here…let’s hope it starts feeling like it soon! March was the new busy month at Homestead School. The children were busy participating in PARP activities. At home, our children were busy racking up the reading minutes hoping that their class would win the double recess prize. I have never seen my 1st grader read so much. (At press time, the winning class had not been announced.) In school, they were treated to a performance of Elephant and Piggie and competed in Brain Challenge. The GCHS varsity athletes visited Homestead and read the book, The Dot by Peter H. Reynolds, to each class. They spoke about their sport inspiring our children to pursue the activity they love. We also had parent athletes visit Homestead to read a book to the children and to speak about their own sports experiences. I saw many of our families at our first ever PARP Primary PJs and Literacy Night at the GCMS Library. What a fun and amazing night! Our children listened to our favorite administrators and teachers read books, played various literacy games, competed in sight word bingo and finally the children read a book to their favorite chaperone. Hopefully, everyone was able to jump start their spring cleaning by donating their gently used books to the Book Fairies Drive at the end of March. Our PARP program could not have run without the dedication of our very own Lauren Kennedy who ran this phenomenal program for the entire district as well as Karey Kumpel and Juli Corrigan who helped run it at the Homestead level.

Our annual PTA Dinner was held at the Garden City Hotel on Thursday, March 15th. It was a sold out event! Our very own Mr. John Bentz, retired Homestead janitor/current beloved lunch monitor, was given a NYS PTA Honorary Life Member Award. It was such a fun and amazing night.

We ended March by celebrating the achievements of our fellow classmates at the Primary Reflections Award Ceremony on March 26th at Homestead School. I want to thank Jigisha Motwani for running the Reflections program at Homestead and for planning our awards ceremony. A list of our school’s winning entries and artists is now posted on our PTA website.

With the end of March comes the conclusion of our very successful Literacy at Lunch Program. Thank you to Amy Mueller for seamlessly coordinating this program for all of us. Our children really enjoyed having us visit them throughout the winter months to play games with them and their classmates.

I would like to thank Laura Bley for running Homestead’s Box Tops program this year. Our goal for Homestead this year is to raise $750. In order to reach our goal, every family at Homestead needs to clip and send in 15 more Box Tops. We can do this! Laura will be running one more drive in May to try to meet our goal by the last June 1st submission! The money that we earn goes directly to Homestead. Dr. Viscovich buys much needed playground equipment for our kids to enjoy.

There are still some open spots to volunteer at our school library. Please visit the sign up to see where you can help out. Thank you to Carey Savio for running this program for us and Homestead School this year!

Mark your calendar! On Tuesday, April 10th, there will be a Primary Joint PTA Meeting held at Hemlock School at 7pm. Please note both date and time change.

Order your child's September school supplies ONLINE in April! Save time & money with quality products. Custom packed for your child's classroom. Avoid summer shopping hassles: No crowds, traffic, or guesswork. Online order dates: March 5, 2018 – April 20, 2018. Please click here. Supplies will be available for you to pick up on Saturday, June 2, 2018 at the Garden City Middle School Cafeteria from 9am-2pm.

Our Homestead Staff Appreciation Luncheon will be held on Tuesday, May 22nd. Our school committee members, Lauren Kennedy and Deborah Donaghy, are busy planning this event. They will need volunteer parents to help out. Be on the lookout for a Sign-up Genius in April to help make this event special for our Homestead teachers and staff.

Homestead School will also have various Board Positions open next year. Sadly for Homestead, many of our amazing 1st grade volunteer parents are moving on to Stratford along with me! I will advertise the open positions by our final Primary PTA Meeting and Thank You Breakfast on Tuesday, June 5th. Please take a look here at all the different Board Positions at Homestead School for additional ways to get involved!
