Monthly eNewsletter School Report

It was a very busy April at Hemlock. On April 10th, we held our last Joint Primary PTA Meeting at Hemlock School at 7pm. Health and Safety presented their Safe Driving Campaign. Hopefully the children aren’t being too harsh on your driving skills with those tickets that were sent home in the backpacks. Mrs. Bellovin and Lauren Kennedy recapped the PARP program and showed everyone the PARP Kick-off and Wrap-up videos. Updates were given on the first grade Memory Books and Staff Appreciation Luncheons. Next year we plan on scheduling two of our PTA meetings in the evening to try to accommodate parents’ busy schedules. Also in April, the children were treated to a presentation by the Bucket Fillers to help reinforce the Bucket Filler program at all the primary schools. This presentation was paid for by the Garden City PTA and with your membership dollars.

Our Hemlock Staff Appreciation Luncheon will be held on Thursday May 10th. Our committee reps, Sivan Chapman and Mandi Cerrone, are busy planning this event. Our luncheon theme this year is “Learning is an Adventure” We are looking for all kinds of help. We will need a staff of people to set up, clean up and serve. If you can’t volunteer your time, there are other ways to help. Please click this to the Sign Up Genius for all the different ways to contribute to this wonderful event. In addition, our children are helping us decorate for this celebration. Our committee has been visiting every classroom to help the children with a surprise for the staff.

We have an exciting school wide art project coming to Hemlock School this month sponsored by the Garden City PTA. Our children will be painting their own 2-3 inch rock with their own unique design to be installed in Hemlock School’s main courtyard forever. Their rock “legacy” will brighten up our courtyard for years to come. This project is inspired by the book, Only One You, by Linda Kranz which compliment the Bucket Filler Program at our school. The PTA is providing the paint, the brushes, and various other supplies. In addition, we will be purchasing copies of this book for the classrooms. Finally, we will be setting up a volunteer schedule as we need parents to come to their child’s art class to help supervise. Class parents will be emailing the classes shortly to recruit some helpers. Mrs. Leyland, Hemlocks art teacher, and Mrs. Bellovin are extremely excited about this project.

I would like to formally announce that our new Hemlock Director for year will be Tim Crowley. Sadly for Tim and Hemlock, many of our amazing 1st grade volunteer parents are moving on to Stratford and Stewart. As a result, Hemlock School will have various Board Positions open next year. I will advertise the open positions at our final Primary PTA Meeting and Thank You Breakfast on Thursday May 31st. In addition, a volunteer Sign Up Genius will be emailed to everyone by the end of May with all the Hemlock Open Positions with a brief description of each role. If you are at all interested, please sign up. Your sign up tells Tim and me that you are interested in this position and would like to find out more information. It does NOT mean that you have the position or that you are obligated to fill the position. During the summer, Tim will follow up with everyone to discuss further. If you are interested in being a class parent next year, the Class Parent Interest Form needs to be filled out. Class Parents are chosen by our grade reps through a lottery process in September.

In addition, if anyone has interest in joining a district PTA committee, please contact me to discuss. I can get you in touch with the appropriate people. There is no shortage of ways to get involved with the PTA and in your child’s schools! It is a myth that you can’t both volunteer for the PTA and have a full time job. Many of our volunteer jobs can be done by a working parent. Over the last two years, I have had many parents who work outside of the home who were class parents and/or were on my Hemlock School PTA Board.

Hemlock’s Box Tops Coordinator will be sending a final Box Tops Drive Kick-off email this month for our final June 1st submission. The email will include an activity sheet to be printed out. The sheet has room for 25 Box Tops so let your children go on a scavenger hunt in your pantry.

Our Memory Book Committee is busy designing our First Grade books. I would like to thank the committee for all of their hard work and dedication in creating these books. This is a year-long process of planning, interviewing, compiling and designing. Our committee is still accepting group pictures of our children through mid-May. Please try to get group pictures at the Spring Sings and the Mother’s Day celebrations. Please forward your photos as soon as possible to along with the teacher's name / event name to ensure we get all the classes equally represented.

Please remember that if you ordered school supplies through our annual fundraiser, they will be available for you to pick up on Saturday, June 2, 2018 at the Garden City Middle School Cafeteria from 9am-2pm.
