GCUFSD Board of Education

The role of the Board, its governance, operations, policies and goals are outlined in the District Board of Education’s Policy Manualfrom which the following has been obtained.

The Garden City Union Free School District’s Board of Education (the Board) consists of 5 elected non-paid members of our community.  Each member serves a term of 3 years (July 1 – June 30). Public elections for school board trustees occur at the same time as the general school budget vote in May. As a body of elected representatives, the Board must abide by federal, state and local laws, rules and regulations. The Board selects its president and vice president.

Board members set goals, establish policy for the school system and carry out the directives and decisions of the New York State Department of Education. Some of their responsibilities include prescribing courses of study; re- viewing, presenting and overseeing the school budget; levying taxes in accordance with law; contracting and employing staff; setting school boundary lines; providing school sites and buildings; purchasing fuel, furniture, and other necessities for use in school buildings; and providing student transportation. The Board of Education is responsible for the efficient management of the schools and appoints the Superintendent of Schools as its chief administrative officer to make recommendations concerning the above activities and to carry out the decisions of the Board of Education.

Attendance and Participation of the Public at Board Meetings
Members of the public are welcome at all Regular Board of Education meetings, and the Board encourages the public to attend. Meetings designated specifically as Executive Sessions are not open to the public.

The Board of Education encourages public participation on school related matters at Regular Board Meetings. Participation in work sessions is granted only by special permission of the Board.  However, public participation at budget work sessions is welcomed and encouraged.
