Dr. Prendergast also gave a report on the recent focus groups and informational meetings hosted by the International Baccalaureate Committee for parents interested in the IB diploma program. She said 45 parents representing all grade levels attended either the day meeting on Feb. 25th or the evening meeting on March 5th.

She also explained why the program cost was not presented at the meetings. Nanine Cuttitta, high school principal, and David Perrotta, high school assistant principal, who are also members of the IB committee, had attended a level 1 IB training session for administration and coordination. The February meeting of the IB committee, where they were to present and discuss their findings with other members of the committee, was cancelled due to inclement weather. The IB committee therefore did not have all of the data needed in time for the focus groups.

Dr. Prendergast said an announcement was made at the beginning of each meeting stating that funds had not been allocated in the 2009-10 school budget due to the current economic crisis. The program is expensive, with a start-up fee that ranges from $50,000 to $100,000.

The IB committee will meet later this month to review the training session findings, as well as the feedback and questions raised at the parent focus group meetings. She said all questions were recorded and will be shared with the entire IB committee. A summary of the parent focus group meeting will be made available to the community on the district's Web site.

"The members of the committee appreciated the comments and the conversation which took place amongst the groups and the members look forward to updating the Board later this spring with regard to the committee's findings and recommendations," she said.

In other news, eight staff members will attend Level 1 training over the next school year for the International Baccalaureate Program in order to gain a better understanding of what it entails. The IB Program began in 1968 and consists of either a certificate program for students who take individual courses, or a diploma program for students who complete core requirements. The district has not been accepted into the program and is under no obligation to continue the process after the first level of training is received.

Students explore six academic areas, as they also work to complete three central core elements. The six areas include two modern languages; a humanities or social science subject; an experimental science; mathematics; and one of the creative arts.

The core elements are mandatory and include a 4,000-word essay on a topic of student interest; the study of the theory of knowledge and creativity, which provides an opportunity for reflection on how we know and what we know as it makes connections to other disciplines; and creativity, action and service, which allows students to earn credit for participation in extra-curricular activities such as athletics, drama and music, as well as for service to the community.

Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction Dr. Teresa Prendergast has been studying the Advanced Placement examination currently in place and the possibility of implementing the International Baculaureate program in the district. Many teachers in the district attended the College Board's Advanced Placement Course Audit seminar in the winter.

The College Board is auditing all AP classes in schools across the country. Teachers are required to submit a form and syllabus for the board to review. After evaluation, the board will decide if the course can receive the official AP designation. So far, the district's foreign language AP classes, with the exception of Latin, have been approved. The district is waiting to hear from the board about the Latin, math and English AP courses.

The IB program is a rigorous series of courses that a student would be required to take which includes a Humanities component and an exam. Dr. Prendergast said a committee is looking into the issue and will visit districts which offer the program in the fall.
